Hemi vs. Gutta

DON'T SLEEP! Two emcees from the same crew face off in New Orleans in a match-up some fans are calling the South's Battle Of The Year.

Who: Hemi (New Orleans, La.) vs. Gutta (Austin, Texas)
Where: New Orleans Battle League's "Clash of the Titans 2" in New Orleans, La.
When: Jul. 18, 2015

Pretty much every battle we post on the site is either notable or excellent, but occasionally we want to pay extra attention to footage that deserves more love than it's getting on YouTube. See all our "Don't Sleep!" battles here.

This battle and its footage have been highly anticipated, with some fans calling it the south's Battle Of The Year. Despite being in the same VillainLyfe crew (which also includes HA Double and Sire), neither emcee took it easy on the other as they drop bomb after bomb.

Hemi and Gutta have put in years of consistently remarkable work over the last few years and have made their names synonymous with #SouthernBattleRap. They both exhibit a level of lyricism previously unheard of in the Deep South and are (along with a few others) at the forefront of bringing national attention to the Southern scene.

Both performed at their peak in this battle with Hemi dishing out punch/scheme/wordplay combinations in rapid succession. Each bar is written so intricately, laced with double and triple entendres that it may take several watches to fully catch everything he spits. Gutta has the presence and prowess of a true veteran and remains one of the most slept-on talents in the game. His witty lyricism, aggressive demeanor, and tenacious delivery connect well with the crowd especially well here.
