Dumbfoundead Speaks On His Battle Rap Return

"This might be my last battle for a while," Dumbfoundead says. "I'm just kind of going a battle at a time."

Late in 2014, KOTD dropped one of the biggest recent announcements in battle rap with news that long-dormant battler Dumbfoundead would return at the upcoming "Blackout 5" event.

Dumbfoundead has spent the last several years outside of the ring working on his music, and while his opponent at BO5 has yet-to-be announced, his return is one of the most-anticipated moments of 2015 all the same.

Calling in to the Angryfans Radio show yesterday, Dumbfoundead explained his perspective on the change in the prevailing style in battle rap since he left the industry in 2009, whether or not this battle will be his final one, and more.

When asked if his BO5 return represents a full-fledged return to battle rap, Dumbfoundead said, "Nah, I don't know about that."

"I'm coming back for this battle," he added. "I'm gonna feel it out and see how I feel and see if I wanna do another battle after that. This might be my last battle for a while. I don't know. I'm just kind of going a battle at a time."

After admitting that he fell out of touch with the scene, Dumbfoundead said that he's spent the last several weeks catching up.

"In the last fucking two weeks I watched like a hundred battles," he said. "That shit was crazy as fuck. I got mad respect. I think it's evolved. Fools are just crazy. Double and triple entendres and shit. That was never my style. I never did the double entendre, shit like that. I like being straight to the point. My punchline is in the first line. I'm just gonna diss you and then follow-up diss you ... To me watching that, I give a lot of respect. I think cats put a lot of thought into it."

Without giving away many clues, Dumbfoundead announced that his opponent is "definitely from America" and unlike anybody he's faced off against before.

"I'm excited about this next battle too," he said. "That kind of falls into this whole new shit too. My opponent is nobody like I've battled in the past. He's definitely from America. That's as far as I'll go."

Expanding on his return and the change in the industry, Dumb addressed the newly popular mash-up style of battling.

"I really wanted to come back," he said. "I was doing the music shit for a while and I got a little uninspired in that department. I kind of wanted to go into the battle shit. I just really liked it. I was watching these battles like, 'This is some crazy different shit.' To me, when I was younger and doing it, I just felt like it was fun. I loved clowning motherfuckers. But now it's like some other fucking crazy beast of spoken word, weird gun poetry. I don't know what the fuck it is. Fools put in mad work, man. I tripped the fuck out. Motherfuckers using candy bars to talk about how you're gonna shoot somebody. It's fucking beautiful and goofy at the same time. And hard. I don't know what the fuck it is now."
