Okwerdz Says "Battle Rap Is Not About Second Chances"

Okwerdz says "you don't get a second chance" on the place of rematches in the industry. "It's who was good under the pressure at that moment."

Talking with Battle Rap for an exclusive interview about the prospects of his return to the scene, Okwerdz described a string of possible names that might motivate him to get back in the ring. Alongside mentions of DNA, Sirius Jones and Reed Dollaz, Okwerdz also explained his recent hiatus and feeling like “Battle Rap is not about second chances.”

“They still offer me a battle every fucking event,” Okwerdz said despite his not battling for some time. “I think about it still, but it’s not gonna be DNA. I just think he’s wack. They keep offering me DNA every time. Every time. I think he’s trash. He’s had a couple good performances. His shit against Rone was fire and I’ve told him that to his face, ‘Your shit against Rone was amazing.’ But you gotta think too, that’s three one-minute rounds. So then when you go to a SMACK battle that’s one of his rounds. A lot of the time he’ll have a cool first round and then everything else will be trash. He goes with the same predictable ass approach every time. It’s just boring. The Pass battle, all it was was just, ‘Pass, Pass, Pass, fuck Okwerdz. Pass, Pass, Pass, fuck Okwerdz.’ It’s boring, bro. If I was to ever come back, I would just want something exciting. Something that I wanted to do, not some stan that’s been calling me out for hella years that I don’t even really care too much about.”

Speaking specifically about possible match ups, Okwerdz began with a mention of veteran battler Sirius Jones.

“I’d fuck Sirius Jones up,” he said. “I’d kill him. I always thought it’d be fun to battle Reed Dollaz. I don’t think he’s even battling anymore either. I always thought it’d be fun to yell at that guy a little bit. Just out of respect. I’m a fan of Reed Dollaz, don’t get me wrong. Me and Sirius Jones go back and forth. I don’t really fuck with him. But Reed Dollaz, I’m a fan. That would be fun. That’s something that would be worth coming back for. He’d probably charge a million dollars though. Probably never happen.”

Backing into some more general comments about Battle Rap as a whole, Okwerdz said that the industry “is not about second chances" on the place of rematches.

“If you came here and you took me light, that’s your fault,” he said. “You don’t get a second chance. It’s who was good under the pressure at that moment. People fuck up. I’ve done it myself when I lost against Rone. That’s my own fault. I’m not chasing Rone around saying ‘Please give me a rematch.’ I don’t give a fuck. He got his win fair and square as far as I’m concerned. I’m not tripping.”

Moving away from Battle Rap, Okwerdz detailed his reason for leaving the scene behind to focus on other ventures.

“I’m enjoying walking through the doors that my hard work and dedication in Battle Rap has opened for me,” he said. “I really want to take the time to do that. If you look at some of these guys who have a gazillion views, they don’t even have a shirt or a song. They’re not doing anything. They just want to be that cool battle rapper that walks in the room and gets bitches. That’s cool and everything, I just have a lot more ambition than that. I want to do more to define myself than the competition. I want to leave something where it doesn’t have to be a winner where we can build instead of just shitting on each other to get by. I’ve seen it on both sides. When you shit on someone bad they’re gonna have a terrible six months following that. I don’t want to have to do to somebody to progress my shit. Why can’t we both just do some shit?”
