Chilla Jones Talks Living Off Of Battle Rap

Exclusive: “Yeah it’s possible but it takes a lot of time, takes a lot of dedication."

Chilla Jones doesn’t just occupy his time with Battle Rap, in fact battle rapping is something he does on the side. Although he doesn’t rely on it to make a living, he does say you can live off of Battle Rap and there are multiple ways to go about it.

In an exclusive interview with BattleRap.com, he told us, “yeah it’s possible but it takes a lot of time, takes a lot of dedication. You pretty much have to battle once or twice a month,” said Chilla Jones.

After comparing battle rapping to a regular job, Chilla shares how he balances being a battle rapper and working a nine to five.

“I like using Battle Rap to supplement my income,” …, “I work a regular nine to five, I put in my forty hours and then come out here on the weekends when I can, once or twice a month and get little more money.

“I love the culture though,” …, “you could definitely make a living off it but you just gotta be dedicated to the craft, man, you can’t slack, you got to build that demand.”

When being asked what his nine to five is, he answers, “I’m a sales person and I’m a customer service rep.” According to him, a lot of battle rappers are ashamed to say they have a job aside from battle rapping. “They want to portray this image, this street life image,” he explained.

Ghostwriting occurs more than ever, in Chilla Jones’ opinion, but he also believes that people get wrongfully accused of ghost writing, using 40 B.A.R.R.S and O’fficial as examples.

“(Battle Rappers) Rather pay somebody for a crazy round, or for three crazy rounds, rather than just putting that time into getting better.”
