Kid Capri Details Upcoming "Top Tier" Battle Rapper Album

Kid Capri explains his support for battle rap and recalls trying to bring a battle rap show to HBO.

Speaking with Jack Thriller of ThisIs50, deejay Kid Capri detailed plans for his upcoming Top Tier battle rapper album. The album's features will include emcees who competed at the Total Slaughter event in July.

“I got tired of hearing [that] battle rappers can’t make good records,” Capri said. “I was in my crib watching all the battles. I’m saying to myself, ‘This shit need to be on TV. Why ain’t nobody stepping up doing nothing?’ So I called Lux one day and told him I wanted to bring it to HBO because of the relationship I had with Def Comedy Jam at HBO. So I went and got KRS-One, Rakim, and Big Daddy Kane and made them the judges. Shit was dope, brought the big TV out in the crowd so they could see it outside of the shop. It was a real big day. We did the show, shot the Goodz and Tech 9 battle. We ended up not doing whatever and then a few years later I’m still watching the battles all the way through and... Lux and Calicoe blow up with the battle, took it over the top. This right here, this project is gonna be big. They say battle rappers can’t make good records but some of the best battle rappers in the world made some of the greatest records: KRS-One, Eminem, LL [Cool J], Meek Mill was a battle rapper. It just take somebody to say, ‘Yo, do it like this. Rhyme to this beat. Lean on it like that.’ That’s what I wanted to do. I produced the whole album. All the beats is done by the Kid Capri.”

In July, Kid Capri served as a judge at the inaugural Total Slaughter event in New York City after consistent support for the culture in recent years.

Earlier this month, Capri tweeted a picture of himself alongside Smack White while working on the Top Tier album.
