Music Of The Week: Sahtyre, Jaz The Rapper, Hitman Holla

Our rundown of recent music from the battle rap community.

With "Summer Madness 4" on the way, followed by a host of fall events, we're taking a quick break to again feature some of the week's best music from battle rappers.

Included below is new music from Jaz The Rapper, Pass, Hitman Holla, Sahtyre, and more.

Jaz The Rapper - “Off The Corner Freestyle”

Keeping her name relevant both inside and outside of the ring, Jaz The Rapper dropped off a freestyle with accompanying visuals yesterday (Sept. 15). Weaving in and out of several flows, Jaz raps about her still-on-the-rise come-up.

Symba, Pass, Peoples - “Road To A3C”

Participating in the “Road To A3C” cypher series presented by TeamBackPack, Bay Area battler Pass joined emcees Symba and Peoples, rapping, “I’m from the O stupid / But I don’t go stupid.”

Last year, Pass battled DNA at KOTD’s "Battle of the Bay 6" event. Speaking with HipHopDX after the match-up, he explained making the transition into music. "I'm definitely working hard on some music,” he said. “Trust me when I say that I will be killing the stereotype about battle rappers making music.”

Sahtyre - “Prince Thunder”

With a sample of Prince’s “Thunder” in tow (and the obvious source of the song’s title), retired battler Sahtyre let loose his newest single last week. With a bogged-down trippy effect on full display, Saht even interpolates a classic bedtime prayer to examine the place of God and religion.

Hitman Holla - “Hotel Suite”

With battles planned against Tsu Surf and Calicoe later this month, Hitman Holla released his “Hotel Suite” as a lead-up. “Hard work that’s all me / Dedication that’s all me / Built the brand that’s all me / Bullshit don’t involve me,” he spits over a laid-back R&B sample.

Lefty - “Spark Of Madness”

Don’t Flop emcee Lefty released his “Spark Of Madness” video last week. Shot in Chiavari, Italy, the somber visuals accompany Lefty’s introspection and feature a fitting clip of the late comedian Robin Williams near the end of the song.

Rob Roy - “Vlog For Norther Strike 3”

With a history of promoting small battles with surprisingly well-produced visuals, Canadian rapper Rob Roy released his latest vlog over the weekend. Prepping for a battle against Herbs in Edmonton next month, Rob Roy’s KOTD-released visuals feature police detectives (one played by Dirty Harry) in search of a body he left deep in the woods.
