Battle Rap: Not Just For Grown-Ups

BattleRap.com takes a look back at some of the biggest "kid" battles in recent memory.

Earlier this month, a rap battle between a handful of students at the St. Mary Redcliffe and Temple School in Bristol, England went viral. The video reads like a parody of battle rap dynamics — over excited hypemen are in full effect — and is definitely full of cringe-worthy rhymes and delivery. The four-minute clip, which was filmed in March, ends with the group dispersed by a teacher investigating the noise and the footage apparently led to several students being expelled, according to headteacher Elisabeth Gilpin.

“Many of the students involved now no longer attend the school,” she said in an interview with The Bristol Post. “Those that do have been dealt with, with regard to the inappropriate language and sentiments and the dangers of posting anything on Facebook.”

Released by the AHAT battle league, this match-up between 14-year-old Lil Sexxy and 16-year-old Miles Low has tallied up one of the highest view counts of any battle ever.

This video from 2005 has been watched more than 2.5 million times on YouTube, and while the instrumental to Young Jeezy’s “Go Crazy” is underlaid beneath, it's the second emcee, Raindrop, who really steals the show.

In this video filmed at the Cinco De Mayo Fiesta in West Side Saint Paul last year, a child shows that even in battle rap age is just a number, making a fool of his grown-man opponent in the process.

The green shirted contender in this battle, Illipsis, has continued his battle career with match-ups in KOTD’s GZ Vancouver division, proving that a little viral success can kickstart a career. Still, this clash from his high-school days has remained his most-watched battle by far.

Uploaded by an older cousin, this battle of the wits between elementary-aged Ogerlicious and T.J. was apparently filmed in 2009. As Dame Taylor assures, this is “all freestyle” and despite that fact, about a minute in, eight-year-old Ogerlicious drops this bomb: “You don’t know how to rap but you know how to pick your nose.” Shortly after, Oger shouts out his mom, dad, the lone spectator, but definitely not his opponent T.J.

This battle between Mash and Makhi, 13 and 14 years old respectively, was filmed with the parents of both contenders present.
