Caustic Recaps Battle With Cali Smoov

EXCLUSIVE: Caustic also discusses what “Ether” means for the West Coast battle scene.

Following his battle against Cali Smoov at FCMG/FilmOn’s “Ether” event this past Saturday (Dec. 6), Caustic spoke one-on-one with BattleRap.com to weigh in on the match-up.

First off, Caustic explained why it’s difficult to be the first battle on any card.

“It’s always rough being first battle of the night,” Caustic says. “[There’s] a lot of pressure to set the tone and how you battle is kind of gonna affect how everyone else battles. It was kind of rough figuring out the mics and still getting people in the venue so the crowd was kind of not there yet … We both had headsets but once Cali headset failed we just switched to mics. So I just accepted it then and there. You’ve gotta understand, holding a microphone is gonna to take away from your performance every time.”

Addressing his opponent’s material and approach, Caustic says he was impressed with some the angles Cali Smoov took.

“I thought it was good,” Caustic says. “I thought we equally got slept-on honestly. He came a lot better than I thought he would. His second round was tough, his second round was really good. His first and his last round were kind of light. I feel like I got the first and the third. I liked how Cali approached the 'caustic substance' angles and shit. Nobody ever really tried that shit before and I know a lot about [that], I fuck with that shit. The chemistry bar was kind of gay, though. I keep it real with you.”

Later on in the conversation, Caustic addressed what such a big platform meant for the West Coast battle scene.

“I think we needed this kind of red carpet treatment, especially after ‘Total Slaughter,’” Caustic explains. “We’re just as popping out here. The West [Coast], we were the Mecca for this shit for so long and people like to act like they forgot that shit. It’s always hard to organize big shit like this. Battle rap is such a raw [and] in-the-streets thing that it’s really hard to overproduce it and make it a big show. ‘Total Slaughter’ found that out [and] we’re kind of finding that out. It’s just a difficult thing to do. Before you sit there and complain and fucking hate on everything, realize that there’s so much shit that goes into making all this happen.”

Shortly after his battle, Caustic took to Twitter to discuss the match-up. Check out some of his thoughts below:
