Bars Over Everything ... For Only $555

BattleRap.com gets the low-down from the owner of a new site that is offering to sell bars to battle rappers.

A controversial new website that sells verses to needy emcees is ruffling feathers in the battle rap community. The platform employs a team of “professional writers who excel at writing high quality bars that will ensure victory for whoever uses them in a battle” according to the website, called BarsOverEverything.com.

Prices range from $350 for three one-minute rounds to $555 for three five-minutes rounds. That works out to 12 minutes of additional content for an added cost of $205. Check out the full price list here.

According to the site’s “About Us” page, the ghostwritten verses will incorporate "bars, wordplay, punchlines, metaphors, double entendres, triple entendres, schemes, name flips, personals and jokes."

Once a customer finalizes a purchase, they are asked to email Bars Over Everything the details regarding their opponent, including any footage from previous battles. The bars will be sent out a week later via email.

BattleRap.com reached out to the site to get the low-down on everything that’s going on, although the responses kind of opened up more questions than they answered. Either way, here's what they had to say.

BattleRap.com: Who is behind the site? Where did the idea for the site come from?

BarsOverEverything.com: I thought of the idea for the site; I've watched a lot of battles and I've noticed that battlers come with an abundance of mediocre bars. The fans pay a lot of money to go to the events and they expect to hear phenomenal bars, but the bars the battlers come with are below par. Bars are the most essential element in battle rap and I'm tired of seeing battlers spit a plethora of recycled bars; I've even seen battlers blatantly steal other battle rappers’ bars. The fans watch battles to see classic battles and if battlers are coming to battles with weak written material, there won't be many classic battles and that is a detriment to battle rap.

Who writes the bars? How can you guarantee quality? Do you have any examples of the kind of content you create?

We have a group of writers who write the bars. We can guarantee high quality bars: we have the intelligence and the creativity to write intricate and hard-hitting bars that the fans want to hear. We are avid fans of battle rap, so we know what type of bars battlers will need to have in order to win battles. Someone recently emailed us and asked to see some samples bars (I can't say who because they're privacy is confidential). We didn't have any sample bars, so I had to send them a few bars that took me about 5 minutes to write.

If a battler purchases bars, we will send them in a weeks time; this gives us the opportunity to meticulously write inimitable bars for them and it proves that we're going to write top-notch bars for them. If we said that we were going to send the bars to them in 2 days, it would show that we're not serious about writing high quality bars for them, but writing high quality bars is of paramount importance to us which is why we will send the bars to battlers in a week.

Ghostwriting is seen by many in battle rap as cheating and many rappers have had their careers hurt over ghostwriting scandals. Why should a rapper risk using this service?

I understand that ghostwriting is seen as cheating by some people, but most battle rappers only battle rap to make money. It's just a hobby for them and it's not their main source of income; I know that there are some battlers whose main source of income is from battle rap, but they are popular battlers and a lot of them are overpaid. They have the perception that they can get away with spitting a bunch of filler because of their popularity and they still get paid a lot of money even though their bars are lackluster. I know that battlers have been hurt over ghostwriting scandals, but if a battler purchases bars from us, their privacy is 100% confidential, so they won't need to worry about getting exposed because we aren't going to tell anyone that we wrote their bars for them.

The Battle Community's Response

A representative from the company has been using Twitter to reach out to battlers (and non-battlers like Angryfan and Drake) to spread the word about the service. Most battlers have either scoffed at the idea or ignored the advances.
