NOME 5: PG Interview Round-Up

From Dre Dennis and Chef Trez to a chat with Norbes, here's a batch of interviews conducted at NOME 5's Proving Grounds event.

The URL PG class got a shakeup recently and the current crop of up-and-comers have been making waves with a handful of scouting events to find new talent.

We caught up with a few of the PG's who showed out at Day 2 of NOME 5 last month and got to know them a little better.

Chef Trez: "People Still Asleep"

Chef Trez is a single year into a formal battle career but has been putting in work since he was around 11 years old. If you missed his moves last year it's time to catch up, and that's basically exactly what he instructed fans to do when we spoke with him after his NOME 5 battle against Dre Dennis.

"Dre did his thing," Chef said. "I feel like I got it 2-1. The third is more preference but Dre was cooking. If somebody say Dre [won two rounds] I wouldn't be mad. Overall it was a great battle."

"I just hope it wakes these fans that still asleep up," he added. "Last year I feel like I did a lot of work, a lot of work, still there's people who don't know who I am. People still [sleeping]. Hopefully this one lets them know, I'm not playing. As far as my career, I got B-Magic next. Then I got Daylyt again in July."

Dre Dennis Says Chef Trez Was Probably His Toughest Opponent

With the battle turning into an obvious favorite among the crowd, Dre Dennis explained why Chef Trez was one of his most skilled opponents yet.

"Tough opponent," he said. "He came with it, he really came with it. All three rounds, all punches. He had three solid rounds. He was nice. Probably my toughest opponent, for real."

"Ah Di Boom, I got him June 20th," he said, looking ahead (although the battle is now set for Aug. 2). "I'm trying to end all them comparisons. Traphouse, New Jersey [is where it will go down]. I'm trying to end the comparisons. Too many people saying we rap the same, saying we perform the same. So we gotta go at it, and we both from Jersey. So we gotta go at it."

Perpetuating his reputation as one of the most hated characters in the battle rap industry, Norbes spoke with us outside of NOME 5 to share his thoughts about the current state of URL and gave his pick for the best international battler in the world.

As for his battle at NOME 5: "I say 3-0 in my favor. He kind of got emotional in the second round which let me know I won."

Tali Becomes First U.K. Rapper To Battle On URL In New York

As the battler who travelled the farthest distance to make it to the event, U.K. emcee Tali was pleased he managed to spit most of his bars.

"I got most of my shit off, he was cooking as well," Tali said. "We'll see when the footage comes out. I'm happy I got to battle because two days ago I wasn't battling. Now I'm battling."

"It's crazy," he said of becoming the first-ever U.K. battler to battle on URL in New York. "I haven't taken it all in. It's a good look. There's gonna be more to come."
