Smack & Beasley Recap "Summer Madness 5"

The URL bosses reflect on the ups and downs of "Summer Madness 5" weekend.

URL's “Summer Madness 5” is over now and it's widely being labelled a success — not bad considering the blowback that the card's initial announcement drew.

BattleRap.com caught up with URL head Beasley to got his take on the event and everything surrounding it.

In the interview, Beasley addresses the fact that SM5 exceeded the expectations set for it. “What was crazy, was some people were apprehensive about the card when we released the card, 'bout attending or how good the battles were going to be, but I always tell people, some things don't work on paper, don't add up to the actual matches and I feel like tonight was a perfect example of that.”

Beasley also spoke about the event going late and Irving Plaza wanting to shut things down during the Loaded Lux vs. Charlie Clips battle. “I said listen man, if you cut this battle in the middle, there's gonna be a riot in here and I don't wanna threaten people and I wasn't saying I'm going to be the cause of the riot, but I knew, potentially, what could cause if the battle wasn't allowed to finish. I went downtown, I spoke to management and for those who want to know, we paid extra money for us to stay in here and make sure all the battles were completed in entirety, so this is just our type of dedication.”

Finally, Beasley hinted towards the URL's next major moves. “Probably a December the 12th card, do like a Christmas-time event and then I'll have something special, something that is going to be mega. I can not announce this yet cause I'm not fully secure with all the details and terms of the finality of the contracts, but I will just say ... if you thought 'Summer Madness 2' was big, this will be two times bigger.”

Smack White Recaps SM5 Weekend

BattleRap.com also caught up with URL host Smack White to get his opinions on the weekend as a whole.

“I think that we made history, we had a successful event, everybody completed their battles, it was a real, real dope weekend man.” Addressing the same Loaded Lux/Charlie Clips time issue that Beasley spoke about above, Smack explained, “At the end of the day it just took some time, it's a lot of emotions these dudes really want to be presented in certain ways, so we had to get everything right, but you know at the end of the day, we got it done. It was a real dope battle, I knew we was going to do it, we definitely have a good relationship with the venue.”

Smack also spoke about why it's so difficult to run a battle rap event on a tight time schedule, “I never like to call time just for the record, these dudes get paid a lot of money to actually prepare their materials and you know I want every bar out of them for my money ... but agreements are agreements and deals are deals.”

When asked what Smack thinks the battle culture as a whole needs, he said, “New talent is very important for the culture to grow and expand. Thats what I'm advocating for 2016.” Smack then addressed his belief that every league should have their own new talent, “I think that we shouldn't even be pulling from the same talent pool.”

The interview, similar to Beasley's, closes with Smack hinting at a big URL event in December. “We definitely doing something in December. We do an event every December. We know we got to come out with our Christmas classic, it's tradition.”
