URL's "Double Impact" Card Promises All 2-On-2 Battles

The March 26 event features Charlie Clips, Chilla Jones, Tay Roc and more.

URL is doubling up for its next event, with a full card of 2-on-2 battles going down March 26 at New York City's Irving Plaza. The line-up features some established teams, some first-time pairings, and several notable returns to the URL stage.

Here's the trailer:

And the full card:

  • DNA & K-Shine vs. Tsu Surf & Tay Roc
  • Big T & Th3 Saga vs. Charlie Clips & John John Da Don
  • Chilla Jones & B-Magic vs. T-Top & Brizz Rawsteen
  • Chess & Steams vs. Marv Won & Quest MCODY
  • Math Hoffa & Cortez vs. Aye Verb & Yung Ill

Doubles battles have experienced waves of popularity in battle rap over the years: in the WRCs a decade ago, then with KOTD's 2-on-2 tournament in 2011, and again with Don't Flop's tourney in 2013 and the emergence of Shuffle-T and Marlo as a star team.

Last year saw the rise of the "street" doubles format, mostly thanks to the efforts of DNA and K-Shine taking on all competition across the country. As Beasley explains in the trailer, "Two-on-two battles have existed for some time in the emcee battle culture, but in 2015, NWX — a tag-team comprised of URL veterans DNA and K-Shine — brought the popularity of the style to an all-time high." They'll be facing the first-time team of Tay Roc and Tsu Surf, two of the league's most popular talents right now, in a main event that is sure to do crazy numbers on YouTube once the footage drops.

Two other members of NWX are on the card too. Big T and Th3 Saga will team up for the first time to face off against Charlie Clips and John John Da Don, two emcees who have stood across from each other in the ring twice but who are now standing together.

Battle crew Writers Bloque also features on the card, with Chilla Jones and B-Magic joining forces for the first time to face North Carolina's two top exports, T-Top and Brizz Rawsteen.

Math Hoffa and Cortez turned out to have incredible on-stage chemistry in their doubles debut on BullPen Battle League late last year, and Verb shone in the 2-on-2 format when he teamed up with Hitman Holla, netting Don't Flop its most-viewed battle of 2015. This time Verb pairs up with another St. Louis emcee, Yung Ill, who is returning to the URL stage after several years away.

The most seasoned team on the card is Quest MCODY and Marv Won, the Detroit duo who have been battling together for almost 10 years. Marv traded some shots with Chess and Steams in this "Traffic" interview last summer:

Steams and Chess have more experience on the URL main stage though, and as a team they were in both of the league's 2-on-2 match-ups last year. Their opponents were DNA and K-Shine both times, after the first match-up at "Redemption" was stopped when things got too heated, and then finished as a rematch at "Summer Madness 5."
