Cortez & Chilla Jones Recap Their "Born Legacy 2" Battle

Both emcees discuss their strategy and their opinions on the outcome of their "Born Legacy 2" battle.

From Lionz Den to Grindtime to URL to KOTD to Don't Flop (just to name a few), Cortez is a seasoned vet who has graced almost every stage out there. For his battle against Chilla Jones at "Born Legacy 2," he was back in the small-room environment he started out in.

BattleRap.com correspondent Smart Alix caught up with him to get his thoughts on the battle, the perception of him as the "vault king" and a behind-the-scenes story from "Total Slaughter."

When discussing his thoughts on the BL2 battle, Cortez said: “I think I won, I think I won convincingly, some saying 3-0, some saying 2-1, I think it was a dope battle. I came and did exactly what I wanted to do, so that was the dope part about it." When discussing his tactics in the battle, Cortez said "there was a certain game plan, I wanted to talk to him. I knew Chilla could rap, so I said, I'm going to talk to him, and I think it worked."

Cortez addressed the fact that over the past several months he has seemed to recapture the fire he once had. “The main thing is just trying to stay consistent. I fell out of love with battle rap for a while, I was just rapping.” On the change, Cortez says: “At end of 2015, beginning of 2016, I’m going to focus on certain things, on how to move to get the people I want.”

Speaking on his greatest undocumented moment in battle rap, Cortez shared a story about an hour-long freestyle session in the house at "Total Slaughter." Cortez explains: “That’s filmed and it never came out, but whoever has that footage, that’s a million views. All the top battle rappers, even Slaughterhouse was in it with us.”

Chilla Jones: "I don’t know if the battle lived up to expectations"

After impressive performances on the URL stage recently against Th3 Saga and Prep, Chilla stepped back into the type of environment that led to the battle world taking notice of him after his classic with JC. This time around, the man standing across from him was Brooklyn veteran Cortez, at URL’s "Born Legacy 2." ThatShitIsHotSun interviewed Chilla about his thoughts on the battle.

When asked how the battle went Chilla gave a detailed breakdown: “It was regular Cortez. I knew he was going to address the St. Louis, Aye Verb, all that shit. I knew he was going to address that, either in the first or third round, he did it in the first. I think he got the first off the strength of that angle. Second round I snatched it, I had some fire. And then the third round, I don’t know about his third round, he was doing too much storytelling, for me, for my preferences. In my third round I did a lot of rebuttaling.”

When asked if it was freestyle, Chilla said "Some of it was premeditated, but he’s just so predictable that I knew what approach to take in the third round. I feel like I broke him down masterfully.”

Chilla seemed slightly disappointed in the overall product, saying: “I don’t know if the battle lived up to expectations. I think it was good, I wish the crowd were more into it. After Ave and Nitty went, that was a reaction every bar, I think the crowd is just tired right now.”
