T-Rex On Caustic Battle, Reed Dollaz & Retirement

We caught up with the Harlem emcee after his "Back To Basics 4" battle in Los Angeles on April 16.

T-Rex has had accusations thrown at him lately that he has been complacent in battles, and that the old Rex was gone. After his KOTD Back to Basics performance against Caustic, those criticisms may be silenced as he delivered classic Rex. He caught up with Chris Mitchell to give his thoughts:

Rex told us that he liked that battling Caustic brought a different energy in him: “I liked to battle someone completely different. We have different styles so it made me bring out something different. I just went with the old Rex. People said that’s what they want to see.” Rex also indicated that he enjoyed the environment of the battle, saying that he missed the small rooms, mentioning specifically the intimate feel.

In the recent past Rex has hinted that this may be his last battle, but he seemed to walk that back in the interview, saying “It depends, it depends on the fire I get from this one. I really wanted to take a little rest because I ain’t rest in 15 years … but if I can get some energy in little rooms like this then I can pull it back together.

When asked about a potential small room clash with Reed Dollaz, Rex didn’t mince words. “I’ll fuckin kill Reed” Rex said, continuing, “I’ve been to the highest you can be in battle rap, Reed has never been there. So I think there’s a secret little jealousy he might have.”

When speaking of his generation of battlers and their place in the current scene, Rex said “You just got to find your pocket, and when you find your pocket stick to it. A lotta times when the culture changes, you change with it, so now people are seeing a new person in an old body.” Rex summed this up by saying that fans aren’t expecting “Shaquille O’Neal to shoot a three-pointer.”
