Daylyt vs. Aye Verb: What To Expect

Where the two battlers stand, ahead of their Sept. 20 clash at GO-Rilla Warfare's "Blueprint" event.

Ahead of their appearances at the top of a card featuring Charlie Clips, Head I.C.E, X-Factor and Kannons both Big and Young, Aye Verb is inviting Daylyt to bring the heaviest bars he can conjure up, and Daylyt is promising the “biggest gimmick Chicago has ever seen.” But what can we look forward to from the meeting of these two mainstays of modern battle rap?

Daylyt is one of the current flag bearers for the scene. In just the last few months he's appeared in the “Road To Total Slaughter” final, potentially lined up a match with D12’s Bizarre and caught the eye of West Coast/FilmOn investor Alki David. In addition to all that, he's made just as much noise in the ring with his highly lauded battles against Charlie Clips and Chilla Jones.

Verb, meanwhile, failed to make it past the first round of the TV reality tournament and put in a mostly lackluster and poorly received performance against an on-form Illmaculate.

Still, Verb is rounding off his most active year yet, having put in work against Swave Sevah, Caustic and Goodz, and while he doesn’t quite have equivalent momentum or exposure, his clashes have been far more selective and, arguably, against more consistently challenging opponents. And with multiple legendary performances under his belt throughout his career, it's impossible to count him out.

Daylyt is catching a lot of eyes, moving into some interesting places and getting buckets of attention, but he is also at risk of stretching himself thin. Daylyt has had at least 10 battles already this year (even outside of “Road to Total Slaughter”) with more coming in November and December.

This week the Watts battler uploaded a picture of himself to Instagram, proudly seated in a wheelchair, promising to "go retarted" on Verb. Whether this is a hint at the nature of the gimmick he has in store is something we will only know on Sept. 20. Either way, he isn't setting the bar low on his social media accounts.

Daylyt-wheelchair

At the tail end of a year that has seen Daylyt rap in whiteface, pretend to soil himself dressed as Spawn and participate in a Dragonball Z battle with full costume and special effects, the extent to which he can continue outdoing his ever-spiralling level of ridiculousness without undermining himself remains to be seen.

Aye Verb has already spoken out about the face-off, saying that he knows Daylyt could be dangerous — and if there’s any clue that can be gleaned from the pre-battle posts and interviews, it’s that both rappers are approaching this match-up with a sense of fun.
