Ms. Miami Is A Problem

Jon Rines reviews Ms. Miami’s battle with Jai Smoove and potential to be amongst the best.

"If I'm not on anybody's top ten after I battle Jai Smoove, I will be!" - Ms. Miami

Something happened. I don't know exactly what, but there was enough growth in Ms. Miami's bars in her O'fficial battle to silence all whispers about her one flaw. When I saw this I wondered if it was a one-time deal because she was facing one of the best in the world right now, or if it was a new and improved Ms. Miami. I needed to see her next move to get a clear grasp and also to see if she would be the next female to move to top tier behind C3.

RBE's Lift His(/Her) Soul event housed her next battle, against bar-heavy Jai Smoove. Both women were at the same place in their careers, but headed in different directions and this battle could change their fates. Kudos to ARP for booking an intriguing battle that gave a performance-heavy battle rapper a chance to prove she can compete against someone with bars, and on the other side, gave an opportunity for a clever writer to show she can put on an entertaining battle against an electric performer.

Miami started Round 1 doing what she's done before: finishing up a couple of bars against her previous opponent. She quickly went personal on Jai's life and clowned her for not having a place to stay. Ms. Miami isn't an opponent you want going first, as her style can easily set the tone and grab the audience's attention. It was an uphill battle for Jai, whose style is more subtle and the audience wasn't catching all her bars.

Jai had a few bright spots in the first round, but it wasn't enough to stop Ms. Miami's assault.

Things got interesting in Round 2 as Jai Smoove choked ... a lot. One line later, she choked again. Three lines later she choked AGAIN. Four lines later and she tells the crowd she's mad as hell and you guessed it, choked for a fourth and final time.

Ms. Miami opened her third round with a nice freestyle about Jai's choke(s) ending in a presents/presence line the crowd loved. She poured on personals and aggression that all landed, from a John John Da Don movement, to questioning Jai's sexuality, ending on a good Hardaway bar.

Jai Smoove choked again in the third round and gave up completely.

I watched Jai's interview after the battle where she explained she didn't have time to finish her second and third rounds. I believe her and things do happen in life to keep you from being prepared. She made no excuses and wanted the top tiers to give Ms. Miami a chance. The timing of this choke is unfortunate since she desperately needs a win at this point in her career.

Ms. Miami is hungry, determined and brings that raw aggression every crowd loves. With this momentum, the time has come to add her name to the mix to battle the Top 10 women in battle rap.
