On The Come-Up: Cee The Boss & MyVerse

Jon Rines examines the potential of Cee The Boss and MyVerse in Queen of the Ring.

Recently, there’s been a divide between the “Top Tier” male battle rappers of URL and their PG roster counterparts. Adding more turmoil to this divide was Norbes’ announcement that many new recruits will be terminated from the URL roster. This leaves fans hungry, ready for a new star to emerge on the scene to break up the monotony of seeing the same names on every card.

While the guys try to figure this out, it appears Debo and Queen of the Ring have created a formula that is working among the female battle rappers, with new talent getting their chances. Some, such as Ms. Miami, have finally broken through, getting mentioned in conversations about the top females in the scene. Most made it there by hard work and a long pathway of great performances, but there are two women who recently cemented themselves into the conversation after comparatively shorter paths and an outstanding battle against each other: Cee The Boss and MyVerse.

Last week at Queen of the Ring’s "Murder She Wrote" event, the two shook the building and left the impression they are ready to clash with the top females in battle rap.

Cee the Boss was all but hailed as the queen of the We Go Hard battle league. Her public notice began in the summer of 2013 with a crushing defeat of Ms. Tash at "The Humidity" hosted by Raine.

Battling on QOTR’s Sparring Session is always the opportunity you make of it. You can take many battles (like Bonnie Godiva) or you can impress with one decisive victory (such as O’fficial), but I love that Debo judges your actual individual performance rather than using a bland plan that all must follow. Cee’s opportunity came against the talented poet Bizzie Monroe (Latrell Sprewell’s daughter) in what was anticipated to be the battle of the night. Cee withstood a crazy first round from Bizzie with hard-hitting bars and went on to what many saw as an easy 2-1 or 3-0. Debo had already seen enough and booked her next battle in the ring.

Cee brings strong punches with a raspy Panamanian voice that exudes Brooklyn with every syllable. She is an extremely nice woman that who is almost always smiling outside of the ring, but who is equally as deadly during the fight.

There is one woman who matches Cee’s smile and positive aura outside of the ring, but who always shows that she didn’t come to play once a battle starts. She goes by the name MyVerse. I’ve been following MyVerse as an emcee for some time. Many know her from music or her Rock Steady crew, but I want to focus on her as a battle emcee.

She first got her battle rap feet wet against ILL V in Voicebox in the spring of 2013. Her career as an emcee honed her skills too well to not take a giant leap and she did that against Dutchess late last year. Some complain that Dutchess underestimated MyVerse, but that takes nothing away from her performance, bars, delivery and freestyle rebuttals. I didn’t see a newcomer; I saw a threat in the making.

She could have easily asked Debo for a top name based on her reputation alone, but she did it the right way by first taking a Sparring Session. Her defeat of Melato Black is the exact definition of taking your shot and running with it. Literally, battle rap Facebook groups stated they wanted to see MyVerse versus Jaz the Rapper. I couldn’t believe it! It was one of the greatest Sparring Session debuts of all time.

So what does a company do when it has two females on the verge of stardom? Normally they’d put them against weaker talent to build easy victories, but not Debo. The gamble of making them battle each other so soon in their QOTR rise paid off with many fans delighted in the Panamanian versus Puerto Rican showdown.

I enjoy watching the peak moments of when a star athlete or artist transcends to a higher level. Cee and MyVerse cannot go backwards. They have the bars, the performance, the league, the heart and now the fans riding with them and they earned it through hard work. Let this set the standard of how anyone with that drive can make it.
