Daylyt vs. Rone: What to Expect

Adam ‘Mos Prob’ Felman examines the Don't Flop Philly match-up, going down March 29.

In a parallel universe somewhere, a crowd of people and a very lively Internet are actively enjoying Daylyt’s third against Pat Stay. And a probable contender for now-champion Daylyt's King Of The Dot chain is Rone, who is this reality has a goatee. The battle turns out to be very, very good.

It won't be a title match in any foreseeable (real) future, but it's the breed of battle that feels like it could have been. Rone is perhaps the nicest man in any strand of hip hop, and he consistently features in some of the best fixtures from the best events: DNA, 360, Real Deal, Pat Stay, Blizzard, Protege, Nils M/ Skils and most recently Big T have all tested wildly varied and unfailingly fresh approaches from Rone. He simply flourishes against any style.

His likeability is a huge part of this. Even when he's acting abrasive about the massacre of Norwegian schoolchildren (it doesn't happen too often, but it did goad a reaction from Nils) he follows up with witty humor and self-conscious but assured digs at his own persona. The man can rap too. His speed and cadence are the perfect complement to Daylyt's rapid-fire cartoonish wordplay.

But coming up against Daylyt means that you are no longer the most self-aware one in the exchange. On the one hand, Rone is finally battling on home turf, and regardless of how respected he is internationally, you can bet in Philly he will have the reception of a homecoming queen. On the other, Daylyt is ferociously unpredictable, although his stunning showing against Madchild at "Blackout 5" had the global battle audience crossing every body part conceivable that his antic days are behind him after the 2014 he had. Day really is capable of anything and he seems almost immune to being broken down. Rone will have to focus on his performance and his scheming to outshine Daylyt.

I can't call a winner. Their styles are so in tune: utter conviction and unapologetic silliness. And if Daylyt raps, this will be a gloriously entertaining meeting of minds. I'm looking forward also to seeing their off-round defense. Their personae live so large outside of their battles that it will just be great to watch the two of them hanging out.
