B Magic vs. Chef Trez: What To Expect

The main event of Spit Dat Heat's "Legendary" pits a top tier vet against the Atlanta league's top prospect.

As we’ve noted before, Spit Dat Heat is probably the most consistent classic-producing minor league. So much so, in fact, that it might not be right to call it “minor” at this point. It's clear that league boss Miltown Bloe is aiming for another classic with the forthcoming “Legendary” event’s headliner on June 14: veteran puncher B-Magic vs. Atlanta's hometown hero Chef Trez. Anyone the least bit familiar with either of these cats will understand that this battle is going to involve some next-level wordplay and punchlines.

Out of all battle rap crews, it’s safe to say members of Writer’s Bloque are most willing to battle each other. Hell, Daylyt alone has battled half the squad. More importantly though, the way they typically approach these battles meshes perfectly with their bars-over-everything mantra and reliably results in a ton of replay value. This clash should be no different. Recent WB inductee Trez should be determined to cement his spot not only in the crew but in battle rap’s rising elite. Magic, so long as he is focused, will do what his fans expect him to: punch Trez’s lights out.

To say Trez needs this win would be an exaggeration, but it sure wouldn’t hurt. After pumping out classics on SDH, his one URL release so far (a crossover drop from the Quiet Room) was less than stellar, but he was sick for that battle and since reportedly edged Dre Dennis at the PG’s.

Back at home, he’ll undoubtedly be itching to work at peak performance and beat Magic at his own game. Perhaps, though, he’ll try to outdo Magic with his versatility. Part of what makes him so dangerous is the range of what he can do: rebuttal, crack jokes, and of course, punch with the best of them. If he can roast Magic or throw him off with a fire rebuttal, he has a considerable chance to sneak away with the W. And if he saw first-hand what Magic is capable of against Ty Law at NOME 5 then he knows how much it'll take.

All that being said, it’s just plain-old-really-god-damn-hard to beat Magic in a battle that will very likely consist exclusively of “bars.” Although Trez is not immune to slips either, Magic’s tendency to stumble is his only Achilles' heel. That’s not to say that it even happens that often, but because he’s usually up against emcees with premium rounds, it sometimes makes the difference (eg. some fans are giving him the L in the currently unreleased Ty Law battle for his slips in the first round). But it’s probably nothing to worry about; Magic has had ample prep time and he certainly won’t be looking to slack here. He clearly respects Trez and likely wants nothing more than to make a classic with his new teammate.

It would be a surprise to most if this battle amounted to more than mind-bending wordplay and cream-of-the-crop name flips, and that’s probably for the best. The scene already has its fair share of genuine hostility these days, and you can never have too many barred out classics.

Chef Trez vs. B Magic goes down on Sunday, June 14 in Atlanta, with a full day of new talent battling on the 13th. Check the flyers for both events below.
