Haixian vs. Mike P: Post-Battle Breakdown

A closer look at one of this year's better battles from URL’s Proving Grounds.

September 27, 2015. Brooklyn. Two emcees battled to prove themselves worthy of the world’s most respected battle rap arena. Haixian from PG County, Maryland and straight outta Long Island, New York we got Mike P. Let’s get it POPPIN!

This battle was one of the first of the day, and you can tell that the crowd is still just warming up as Mike P is spitting ether. "Paying for YouTube views the way I ordered hits?" C’mon B! WAKE UP! * NuNu Voice * It took no time for Mike to give the crowd what they came to witness: punches delivered with high energy and a raspy tone. The Haitian slang flips (Sak Pase and Map Bule are typical greetings in Creole) were my personal favorites.

Haixian vs Mike P

Haixian skipped any introduction and didn’t waste time addressing Mike P with anything but punches out the gate. A light stumble after addressing DOT with a nice “sawed off/destroy the reach/cut the arm in half” punch kinda knicked his round but he landed on his feet. “The right numbers got you the texts/techs, that’s a locked screen” stood out to me the most.

A mixture of Haixian’s energy not living up to his opponent’s, and the more tailor-made and well-rounded material from Mike P got me scoring the first round easily in Mike’s favor.

Round 2 was the closest of the battle. Mike P sets it off breaking down Haixians character, “You a starter-kit bland timid battle rapper with no goals.” The expressions on some of the faces in the crowd show that “gun SOOOOO big” bars aren’t something we wanna hear in 2015, but Mike made it fresh by referencing Steams' recent viral success, "I stand sideways and hold that bitch in the air like a Steams meme!”

That said, it wasn’t enough to measure up to Haixian’s back-to-back punches in this round. His “Brought the sweeper across then swept back across, I missed a spot!” and his very effective “We’re two different types of white” scheme were two of many moments that solidified this round for Haixian.

The score is 1-1 going into Round 3. I promised Battle Rap Chris I wouldn’t drown this review in quotes so I’m going to just cut to the chase. This round was one-sided as fuck. Both emcees had some standout moments, but what happened next was a tragic lapse from Haixian.

A CHOKE! Shit, some might say he choked twice. There's no room for error at this level of the game. I don’t care if you have to practice your bars on a crowded bus or play them back on your voice-record app as you fall asleep. You don’t choke in the Proving Grounds. This battle was on its way to being debatable but instead Haixian dropped the ball. Mike P takes the battle 2-1.

I still have hope in Haixian and apparently so does URL because it sounds like he’ll be back for another PG this December.

Mike P is special though. The complete package, right down to the self-promotion and marketing. I see a bright future for the paisano emcee on URL. After the battle dropped he vowed to tweak a couple things with his performance. Mike if you’re reading this, don’t nitpick yourself too much. Earl is watching and feeds on that kind of shit.
