Chilla Jones Reviews Rum Nitty vs. Ave

The Kingpen gives his thoughts on URL's "Born Legacy 2" match-up.

What's up world!

It's your boy Chilla Jones AKA battle rap's KINGPEN, and I'm here to review the battle that has had social media on fire the past few days: Rum Nitty vs. Ave from URL's "Born Legacy 2."

First off, let me make it clear that I understand because of my allegiance to Writers Bloque, a verdict for Rum Nitty is going to be perceived as biased. Cool. I'm ok with that. I'll always give you valid reasoning for why I feel how I feel. Secondly, this won't be your typical review, quoting my favorite bars and lines from the battle. There are too many quotables from each side to pick from, so I'll give a summary of the overall feel of the battle, as well as explain the difference between how I felt live and how I felt watching the footage, and what I hope to see next for each of these battlers going forward with URL.

Ave-vs-Rum-Nitty-Ave-1-

Let's be honest here, Ave is one of THE top punchline battlers in the URL, if not in the entire sport of battle rap. After this battle and his previous showings, it's no longer up for debate. His first round was more evidence of this, as he used his time to take shots at various members of Writers Bloque while punching relentlessly for just over three minutes. It was a round that, in my opinion, would've beat most other first rounds that night. He just happened to be standing in front of Arizona's "Gunline King" Rum Nitty, who now looks like he is on an imminent crash course with current URL favorite Tay Roc.

Live, Nitty's performance and delivery just seemed a bit more polished in the first two rounds of this battle. On footage, Nitty's first two rounds translated better than they did live, and while Ave's first translated well, his second lost some potency to me on camera, and whether from lack of material or lack of reaction compared to Round 1, seemed a bit short. I gave the third round to Ave via a very slight edge, but ultimately, you can make a case for Nitty winning every one of these rounds. In the building, people were saying it was "as good as Chilla vs. JC," the standard against which classics between up-and-comers are now judged. On camera, it does fall a bit short of that all-time classic (at least for me).

Rum-Nitty-vs-Ave-Nitty-2

Where do they go from here? Let's start with Rum Nitty. If he continues to put on showings like this, his road through URL will eventually lead to Tay Roc, and although many people are calling for the match-up now, I'd love for Nitty to continue to build his URL resume before that match-up comes to fruition. Why? Well, I enjoy seeing him battle. Don't you? We shouldn't be in a hurry to send Nitty to the top of the URL ladder. I'd like to see him continue to raise his stock and build his profile on the East Coast. I'm not suggesting we wait until 2018 to book it, but I wouldn't mind seeing Rum Nitty vs. Tay Roc on a URL December 2016 card. Nitty has already battled Steams, Chess, Danja Zone and Ave, but here are three more match-ups I'd like to see him in on URL before Tay Roc:

  • Ty Law (Small Room)
  • Yung Ill
  • Cortez

After these match-ups, with hopefully the latter two happening in a medium or large-sized venue, we'll be ready to see who is truly the master of the gunline punchline between Nitty and Roc.

As for Ave, though I feel like he lost this battle, he certainly didn't lose any ground. He's had three consecutive solid showings, two against other highly esteemed PG classmates, and has separated himself from the rest of his class. He's a more entertaining version of Ty Law, which may unfortunately mean Ty's chances at the big stage may be all but gone. Ave has already battled Nunn Nunn and Mike P, putting on spectacular performances against both. The three match-ups for Ave I'd like to see on URL are:

  • Shotgun Suge
  • T-Top
  • B Magic

Ave has a punchline style that will work on a big stage, but he's definitely got some growing to do. Like me, he needs to work on adding a bit more energy to his performance to truly become a force on URL's main stage. After a few more battles, I can see him in a big stage match-up going against one of the best punchline battlers to ever be a part of the URL movement: B Magic.

As for this battle of the punchers, I'm taking Rum Nitty 2-1 over Ave, on the strength of his first two rounds. Both have bright futures on the URL stage as long as they put on performances like this.
