Doomsday: The Top Tier Hits Texas

Dallas to host line-up featuring Aye Verb, Bigg K, Chilla Jones and more.

The newly formed Deep Ellum Music Group has announced a huge new event featuring top names from SMACK/URL due to go down in Dallas, Texas on October 18.

Out of absolutely nowhere, D.E.M.G., in association with DFW Battle League, has appeared and announced “Doomsday,” their debut event. RapGrid is providing a pay-per-view of the event and the flyer also suggests the involvement of Hollow Da Don’s LOM clothing line and the Unbias Review Facebook debate group, although details of the connections are still hazy.

The line-up includes five high caliber match-ups, notably pitting emerging sluggers like Bigg K and Danny Myers against dyed-in-the-wool veterans Aye Verb and Cortez respectively. PG battler Ah Di Boom will face female emcee C3 and Pontiac's JC will meet Scripts. Yung Ill takes on Chilla Jones, who spoke to BattleRap.com about the match-up:

“I've been waiting for a top tier vet to step in front of me. Most people think he is past his prime. He might be. But I have a habit of bringing the best out of people. I'm hoping he doesn’t come light or with the same bullshit freestyles he brought to O-Red. If he does I promise y'all he will get destroyed. I'm ready, so Yung Ill better be on his shit.”

DFW, which calls itself the "#1 Battle League in North Texas," has been hosting events since August 2012 according to this Kickstarter campaign and their YouTube channel has released a few dozen battles featuring mostly local talent since it launched in August 2013. In any case, this is a weighty line-up for a smaller league, and if the logos on the flyer are anything to go by, they have some potent partnerships from which to springboard.

The venue, called "Gas Monkey Live," is brand new, opening the week before the event. The 38,000 square-foot club has a capacity of 2,500 people and an 11-foot by 30-foot video screen as part of the set-up.

Deep Ellum, the sector of downtown Dallas from which some of the organizers gleaned their name, is known for breeding art and creativity, and the introduction of large-scale battle events such as this will be a test to see if battle rap can draw a crowd in previously untapped territories.
