Post-Battle Breakdown: T-Top vs. Charlie Clips

Jason "Majin" Dotts digs into the main event at URL's "Rookies vs. Vets."

Apparently I need to drive a bus into people's houses and personally ask them to come outside and catch these hands. Mainly everyone in the building at "Rookies vs. Vets" who tweeted "Clips 3-0."

Saying this was a 3-0 is like buying a fitted at a gas station and NOT feeling a modicum of shame. Ain't even close to possible. Now I'm not saying this is a bad battle, but it wasn't a good one either. It was decent at best, but I'm honestly glad to see Clips give something remotely close to resembling a fuck about the battle.

T-Top's first round reminded me a lot of E. Ness's first round versus Iron Solomon and that was difficult to type without violently projectile vomiting all over my iPhone. He had rapid-fire shots and well-placed aggression but the problem is that he didn't let the dust settle after the punch, which affects the setup transition for the next bar. Top's first round was ok. Decent shit was said. You gotta build the tank before you put a turret on it.

Meanwhile, Clips decided to show the vets exactly why he's considered the best of the league, but at this point, it barely even needed to be done considering how many times URL has shown the Clips vs. Hollow trailer and jackhammer punched it into our heads like Iron Man with the Veronica armor on.

It was Round 2 that made me scratch the part of the review where I suggested that T-Top's entourage was on the verge of making him WALK back to North Carolina as T-Top switched the formula up and was unstoppable this round, while Clips was the one coming up short. Momentum in this round was traded to the point of where it might as well have been a Pokemon card.

Round 3 of this battle was where things hit the wall. It was like the momentum went out for a pack of cigarettes and decided it wasn't ready to be a father. Both T-Top and Clips were hit or miss and I felt like Clips was having to explain his actions during the Math Hoffa/Dizaster situation for the fiftieth fucking time and it was becoming the new Verb perm joke of battle rap. It's tired and old.

And was it me or was T-Top catering to the crowd more than battling? I mean, looking DEAD at the crowd and being aggressive on some Debo shit to where I'm sure half the crowd tucked their chains and wondered if their bikes were locked up securely. In fact, all the rookies did this. Hard to feel direct bars when they're not being directed at the opponent.

My verdict? None.

I know a review is supposed to have a verdict from a fan's perspective, but in all realism I can't say who won this. These two were on unequal footing like the Karate Kid before the crane kick and I literally can't call this without getting frustrated. My god. This battle is the ex-girlfriend of battle rap. I liked the battle, but it was lacking something a main event usually possesses. What would that be?

To me, it was the drive to see who was better. There's a reason this battle was the main event, but it turned out seeming like it was made that way more off the strength of Clips' name and less off a rookie climbing to the top and opting instead to take the fucking elevator.

That said, I'm Majin and I'm out.

Peace.
